The Poco F5
In the stiff competition in the smartphone realm, Poco has sought to carve a niche through high-performance devices at economical prices. The latest phone, Poco F5, has indeed stirred a plethora of debate among tech pundits. But does it cut the mustard, or has the phone been over-promoted? Let's discover the reality.
Performance and Hardware: A Gamer's Delight?
At the heart of the Poco F5 lies the Snapdragon 7+ Generation 2 chipset, promising near-flagship performance without the hefty price tag. This is further supported by up to 12GB of RAM, and for this reason, the Poco F5 handles multitasking, gaming, and heavy applications with ease. In benchmarks such as AnTuTu and Geekbench, the device impressively stands next to premium counterparts.
The Adreno 725 GPU comes in promising lag-free gameplay in graphically intensive titles like Genshin Impact or Call of Duty: Mobile. The LiquidCool Technology 2.0 regulates temperatures in case of lengthy gaming sessions.
Verdict: Undeniably, the Poco F5 is a performance value champion, but is that alone a reason to be hyped?
Design: Minimalistic or Dated?
So, the design language for the Poco F5 happens to be minimalist with its plastic back and aluminum frame. While this helps the weight down to a comfortably bearable 181 grammes, some might comment it does not have the heft of glass-backed competition.
It is equipped with a 6.67-inch AMOLED display that has a refresh rate of 120Hz and HDR10+ support, making colors vivid and animations fluent. However, the thick bezels and punch-hole camera may not be to everyone's taste, especially those who like a more modern, bezel-less look.
Verdict: The design is functional but not groundbreaking. For some, this might be a dealbreaker.
Camera: More Than Meets the Eye?
The Poco F5 gets a triple-camera setup: 64MP primary sensor with OIS, 8MP ultra-wide lens, and 2MP macro lens. On paper, this seems promising, but performance in the real world paints a different picture altogether.
The main sensor takes sharp and vibrant shots under good lighting conditions. Low-light performance, however, is erratic: there is noticeable noise and a loss of detail. The ultra-wide lens is serviceable but lacks color accuracy compared to the main sensor. The macro lens, meanwhile, feels more like a spec filler than an actual useful tool.
Verdict: The camera system is good in its price range but is not the strong selling point.
Battery Life and Charging: Longevity on a Budget?
The battery of the Poco F5 comes in at a comfortable 5000mAh and lasts well into a day of hard use. It also supports 67W fast charging, meaning 0-100% takes just under an hour. No wireless charging here, but that's a cut-corner that's easy to forgive at this price.
Verdict: So far, so good; excellent battery life and fast charging too.
Software: MIUI Magic or Mess?
The Poco F5 runs on MIUI 14 for Poco, which is packed with a lot of features. It also means a tonne of bloatware that not everyone may want to use. While the customisation options in MIUI are plentiful, some bugs and delayed updates do get in the way of giving it a perfect score in this regard.
Verdict: Software is a mixed bag; for some, it is a selling point, and for others, it's a compromise.
Verdict: Value Champion or Overhyped?
The Poco F5 is a solid device that manages to deliver great performance, a vibrant display, and decent battery life at an aggressive price. However, it isn't perfect either, coming with average camera performance and somewhat underwhelming design.
The Poco F5 is indeed a value champion for gamers and power users on a budget. However, for those users who want more polish or standout features, it may not live up to the hype.
